GreatResponder.com on August 02, 2012 : There were many news reports and rumors that surfaced a couple of weeks ago that Dropbox web hosting based services were hacked by some hackers and many accounts of the customers were completely controlled through some third party password stealing. But, there was no response from Dropbox management till Monday night when it was accepted on its blogging website that they were attached. In their blog message it was confirmed as:

“Our investigation found that usernames and passwords recently stolen from other websites were used to sign in to a small number of Dropbox accounts. We’ve contacted these users and have helped them protect their accounts. A stolen password was also used to access an employee Dropbox account containing a project document with user email addresses. We believe this improper access is what led to the spam. We’re sorry about this, and have put additional controls in place to help make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

It was further admitted that this attack of accounts hacking came in to existence due to the use of passwords of many Dropbox accounts, which were stolen by third party and those passwords were used for spam attacks on Dropbox website users. This impacted the customer of Dropbox globally and especially in European areas.

Meanwhile, it was also assured that Dropbox is now implementing two- step verification procedure to make it sure that no such nasty thing happens in future and the services of the company run very smoothly and efficiently. Further, it was also maintained through blog message that security experts from outside were also engaged into this probe that ultimately established that there was an attack on user accounts through password stealing. The security measure are now being beefed up to make it sure that there is no any such incidence in future.
